Get to know your favourite moose, #00 Marty, a little better!

Hi Marty! Who’s your favourite NHL team, and why?

I like all the teams who have mascots! I made friends with Bailey from the LA Kings on Twitter last year and we swapped notes about Zambino building. Mick E. Moose at the Winnipeg Jets is from my mum’s side of the family. I also have a soft spot for SJ Sharkie and Nordie Wild... Stanley C. Panther... Thunderbug.... Fin.. they’re all great!

How did you get into ice hockey?

I’m from Canada! You don’t get into ice hockey - it gets into you.

When you’re not being the world’s greatest mascot, what do you like to do?

I sleep a lot. I like to eat. I watch lots of hockey and Canadian wildlife documentaries ... some nights I’ll go stand by the highway and just stare at headlights.

What’s your weapon of choice in a zombie apocalypse?

I’d probably just go full prairie and charge them with my antlers. You know, go a bit berserk. Like the time I got spooked in the elevator at the Toy Drive! Good times.

Favourite movie?

When Moose Attack! Ha! Just kidding. National Lampoon’s Vacation is pretty good. “Didn’t the Moose out front tell you we’re closed?” I know that guy!

Do you have a pre-game pump-up song?

Anything by Moose Springsteen.

Favourite comic book hero and why?

Deadpool. I like his sense of humour! Plus I think I would look really good in that suit. 

Do you have a pre-game ritual or any superstitions?

I eat a bag of lollies or two and just think about what sort of fun I can have that day.  I like to check the Zambino pre-game, make sure it’s full of Moose Juice!

What would you say or do to get someone who has no idea about hockey to a game?

I would probably say something tricky like “go to a game”. If they didn’t, I’d have to try and trick them even further. Like maybe go to their house, lick their mail, tip over their pot plants. Friendly persuasion!

Most memorable hockey moment?

The first home win back in 2014. We lost the first few games in my first season as Northstars Mascot, and some people were saying it was my fault! That my number 00 stood for our number of wins. I was happy when we started winning and people realised I wasn’t a curse! Here we are a few years later, back to back champs and eating Weet-Bix from the Goodall Cup.

Any significant plans for the future?

Oh sure! I’d like to get a T-shirt cannon... I’d like to get 4 big drones and tie them to my arms and legs and float over the ice.. I’d like to get my own video game. And donuts. The future is full of rich, double glaze donuts. Ooh. Are we done yet? I’m hungry.

Sit still! Just a few more questions. What’s your favourite thing about being the Northstars mascot?

I like to meet people and to make them smile! It’s fun to hang out with all the fans and take loads of pictures.  Also I have a key to the cupboard with all the lollies in it. That’s a perk of the job. On an unrelated note, we’re all out of chocolate frogs.
