Photo credit: Peoria Rivermen The Proski Newcastle North Stars welcome Brandon Greenside to their 2016 Australia Ice Hockey League team. Greenside, currently the highest scoring defenceman in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), will be joining the Noth Stars on the completion of his finals run with the Peoria Rivermen. Greenside is also holding the highest +/- of any player in the SPHL, and one of the highest of all time. Greenside’s six goals and 31 assists are a big part of his +/- statistic, which he attributes to both the team’s success and a building confidence in his own game. “I think this season has just been outstanding in a number of different ways," he said. "Obviously our team has been successful all year and the systems we play make the game easy for me. Personally, I believe my confidence in my play has skyrocketed this year compared to earlier in my career and I've been fortunate to be put in situations to succeed. It's been an amazing season so far.” North Stars general manager Garry Doré was looking for a player to replace 2015’s Jan Safar, who has retired to become a coach. Safar set records with his 11 goals and 45 assists in just 28 games, and won the Best Defenceman in the AIHL for 2015. The hope is that Greenside can do for the North Stars this season what Safar did in 2015. Greenside is looking forward to the experience both off and on the ice. “I'm definitely looking to travel and see all that Australia has to offer," he said. "I really enjoy my time away from the rink and everywhere I've been throughout my career I try to take advantage of the situation. I'm really looking forward to coming to Australia, meet great people, enjoy the whole experience, and hopefully win a championship while doing it.” Choosing to play in Australia for Newcastle was an obvious choice for Greenside, a “no-brainer”. “I've heard unbelievable things about Australia and the organization in Newcastle," he said. "I will be able to enjoy my summer playing hockey and experiencing a new lifestyle. I’m really just looking forward to embracing the whole opportunity.” The Peoria Rivermen are currently the top-seeded team in the SPHL and playing their first round of playoffs versus Macon beginning Wednesday, April 13. |
