While the majority of the Proski Newcastle North Stars team enjoyed a break from hockey during the long weekend, six of the boys took part in the AIHL All-Stars event. Imports Brandon Greenside and Josh Harris joined North Stars captain Robert Malloy, goaltender Dayne Davis, and defencemen John Kennedy and Mat Lindsay in Sydney for the two-day event. "You compete against these guys all year but deep down we all come from the same areas, the same places," Davis said. "It's good to catch up with old friends really, and catch up with what's going on in each other's lives and then a hockey game breaks out." Davis complimented this year's venue, Penrith Ice Palace, and noted that the second-annual event attracted more fans. The event is split into two days. On Saturday the skills competitions are held, and on Sunday a game. Lindsay, Malloy and Harris, on Team Schlamp for the weekend, took part in the fastest skater competition. Greenside, also for Team Schlamp, and Malloy skated in the breakaway challenge. Lindsay and Greenside did their best in the hardest shot competition, going up against Kennedy, on Team Armstrong, for the title. All players took part in the elimination shootout. Melbourne Mustangs Captain Pat O’Kane won the fastest skater competition, beating out Malloy (12.68 seconds) and Harris (12.44 seconds) with 11.97 seconds. CBR Brave's Geordie Wudrick won the breakaway challenge. Brave teammate Stephen Blunden won the shooting accuracy challenge, hitting all four targets mounted on the net in 18.91 seconds, while Canberra rookie Casey Kubara claimed the stickhandling competition. In the stickhandling heats, Harris defeated Paddy Ward (Sydney Bears) with a time of 18.73 seconds. Melbourne Mustangs’ import defenceman James Isaacs had the hardest shot - 153km/hr - in the hardest shot challenge, but it was the Brave's Jan Safar that won the competition. Safar - with a 144 km/hr shot - defeated Isaacs - 143km/hr - in the final to claim the title. John Kennedy, with a 147km/hr shot, defeated Lliam Webster (Melbourne Ice) in the heats. Sydney Bears’ Brian Funes was the last man standing in the elimination shootout. "The skills part was pretty funny," Greenside said of the All-Stars experience. "It was kind of like the ice breaker for the weekend. You got to meet everybody, go out and do some goofy moves, skate pretty fast... That was pretty cool." A highlight for Davis was the All-Stars game on Sunday, which Team Schlamp won, 10-9. "This year it really felt like an All Star game; high scoring, guys getting some skills in you wouldn't normally see in a regular game basis and beating down the goalie's confidence as usual," he said. For Malloy, the weekend was also a chance to catch up with friends. "Playing in the league for six years, you get to know the guys," he said. "But the imports that come out, there's always a story to tell, there's always friends in common. It was really cool to meet the Perth boys. "There are some guys that you battle with a lot that you shake hands and have a beer with, start from scratch. That's a pretty cool element that you'll find in hockey players." |
