The Newcastle Rescue Northstars overcame a second period slump to win their third game of the 2019 Australian Ice Hockey League season 5-3 against Perth Thunder.
Playing at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday, the Northstars came out of the gate firing and took hold of the game quickly. A goal from Northstars captain Robert Malloy - his 200th AIHL point (for goals and assists) - in the opening three minutes of the game was quickly followed with a second from Northstar Liam Manwarring.
Malloy said "we took our foot off the pedal" during the second period, which saw Thunder score two goals to tie up the game 3-3.
Determined to win, the Northstars powered home in the third, scoring three goals to win 5-3.
Northstars imports Francis Drolet, Dominik Gabaj and Ondrej Smach scored the last period goals.
Northstars Connor Schultz, 17, made his AIHL debut on Saturday. As is a debut tradition, he took a solo lap around the ice in front of the home crowd.
Before the game began, the Northstars and Thunder had a moment of silence to honor Mike Blackwell. Mike, who was part of the 2003 championship-winning Northstars team and played for Newcastle in 2007, died last weekend.
With their win and other results around the league, Newcastle Rescue Northstars now sit on top of the AIHL ladder.
The Northstars return to Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday for their second game of the weekend - against Adelaide Adrenaline. |
