During National Volunteer Week (May 20-26) we're shining the spotlight on our volunteers. These are the people who welcome you into the rink on game days, bring you the livestream, keep you up to date with Northstars news and happenings, score during the game, man the penalty box and do a wide variety of other jobs.
Meet our longest serving volunteer, Peter Lambert.

I've been a volunteer for the Northstars since...
2001
My role with the Northstars is...
Communications manager and play-by-play commentator. I oversee the team for Northstars general manager Garry Doré - basically a cheerleader for our awesome media team.
Why did you join?
Garry asked me to be the team manager for the new national league ice hockey team running out of the Warners Bay rink. It was too exciting an opportunity to miss out on.
Compared the year you started volunteering to now, what are some of the greatest changes to the Northstars both on and off the ice?
In 2002, there was just Garry Doré, Don Champagne and myself. We had to do everything for ourselves.
Bringing in Rob Barnes in 2003 and Peter Antcliff as a team manager allowed us to each develop our own roles and kick start the improvement process we continue each year.
There’s obvious changes, like the addition of glass before the 2008 season, and the seating and facility improvements around the rink like the Jumbotron.
For the media side though, the big changes were adding specialist writers in 2009 (Ellie-Marie Watts is still with us) and then expanding into video production in 2012.
Adding Marty the Moose and the Jumbotron to our resources has also been a big leap forward.
Adding Greg Rickford and Michael Smith to our team resulted in huge leaps forward in our capability and product quality.
In the early years of the AIHL, the only way you could get info about games was by knowing somebody at the event to SMS you updates. If you didn’t know anybody, you’d have to phone the coach when you think the games over for a score and a report on the game.
Now we have social media and live streaming for pretty much every game so our information is immediate and engaging. It was torture waiting hours for a result when you had so much invested in it!

What are some of your highlights or greatest accomplishments in your years volunteering?
Six Goodall Cups go alright on my highlights! Doing play-by-play commentary with Steve Lindsay on colour in the 2011 Finals was also a big highlight.
I’ve made lots of friends both on and off the ice, and maintain many of these both face-to-face and online.
Live streaming the 2006 AIHL final from Adelaide was pretty revolutionary for its time, but putting together our own live video streaming team following on from the earlier work done by Slapshot in Queensland and ATC in Victoria has made us unique in Australia – we’re the only AIHL team to do our own live audio-visual stream.
My favourite thing about volunteering for the Northstars is to hear from the players and their family how much they love to follow their time with the Northstars, no matter if they live in Eleebana or in Ottawa.
Tell us some of the roles you have done for the Northstars over the years...
Originally I was a team manager. My role in 2002 was in looking after the players. I’d organise jerseys, fill water bottles, label equipment, submit paperwork. Pretty soon I was lumped with the job of writing reports for The Star newspaper and ended up enjoying it.
I wrote the first Northstars website in 2003, and we were the first proper multi-page website in the league.
In 2003 I moved to a communications manager role – I acted as media liaison and wrote articles for the website and newspapers. I coordinated with our photographers (Jamie Henry, Simone Thomas, Mark Bradford) over the seasons.
In 2004 I did both team manager and promotions manager – it was a crazy year! I had some help but it was pretty insane.
2005 we had a new team manager and from that point I’ve acted as a communications manager. I supported Don Stolee’s new AIHL website in 2005-2007 and in late 2007 I joined the AIHL as a commissioner.
As the AIHL commissioner I brought in the new AIHL website when we split with Don Stolee, a site we still use 11 years later. We went through some tough times but always got through.
In 2011-2012 I was deputy commissioner and finished at the end of the 2012 season.
Since my first broadcast at the 2006 Finals I’ve been a play-by-play commentator for lack of a better option. Either there’s no better option yet or I’ve got better as I’m still doing it 13 years later.
Aside from commentary, overseeing our team, stats and filling in as a writer now and then I don’t do much - our team is pretty awesome so I’m just here to support them smashing goals.
Volunteering for the Northstars gives me...
Joy.
Joy to inspire and be inspired by such generous, intelligent and creative talents. Joy to be part of a great family who give so much to our exhilarating sport. Joy to see our players struggle and succeed, and most of all to give their family and friends the ability to see, hear and read about their loved ones in the AIHL.
To my fellow volunteers, I want to say...
Inspiring others is the greatest gift you can give, and also give to yourself. You're inspiring all of us - thank you.
