“Exciting”, “huge” and an “honour” is how Newcastle North Stars defenceman Mat Lindsay described his selection in this year’s Mighty Roos squad. “I’m really excited,” Lindsay said. “I didn’t expect to be picked. I’ve been trying to make the squad since 2011, so it was a huge honour to receive that call and have the chance to play.” Lindsay and Bert Malloy will represent the North Stars in the Australian senior men’s team, which will head to Mexico in April for the 2016 IIHF Division 2 Group B World Championships. Lindsay, a co-founder of ice hockey development organisation NSA Hockey, has represented Australia twice at the IIHF World Junior Championships; the first in 2008 in the under 18 squad and the last in 2010 as part of the under 20 side. He was also picked for the 2009 national junior team. However, the tournament in North Korea was cancelled. So when the born-and-bred Novocastrian received a call from Mighty Roos coach Brad Vigon to say he made the 2016 senior men’s team, Lindsay was elated. “It was huge,” he said. “To finally be selected, that really was an exciting point.” Unlike in previous years where players have had to try out for the senior men’s team and be selected based on performance on the day, Lindsay said Vigon based selection largely on players’ performance throughout the Australian Ice Hockey League season. He also based his selection on recommendations from each player’s coach. North Stars coach Andrew Petrie had nothing but praise for Lindsay’s performance throughout the 2015 AIHL season. “I think that once Mat got to the point of belief in himself that I had in him from very early on, that he was able to establish himself as a top four defenseman on our North Stars squad, which makes him a top four guy on any team in the AIHL,” Petrie said. “Remove imports and resident players who aren’t eligible for our national team and that, by my estimation, makes him a no-brainer for selection to the men’s national team. “Brad Vigon and his staff have a tough job ahead of them to rank their D-men because there’s so much talent in the squad. But if it was my call, Mat would see a lot of minutes in Mexico.” The Mighty Roos team was publically announced in December. As well as Lindsay, the Sydney Bears’ Richard Tesarik, Melbourne Mustangs’ Matt Stringer and Perth Thunder’s Rob Haselhurst will all make their debut in this year’s senior men’s side. The team, which also features experienced players such as Mark Rummukainen, Michael Schlamp, Sean Jones and Darren Corstens, will travel to Mexico City at the beginning of April for a training camp. The training camp gives players the chance to adjust to the altitude and time difference, plus learn to play together as a team. The competition will be held between April 9 and 15. Australia, ranked 36th in the world, will face Bulgaria (39th), Israel (33rd), New Zealand (37th), North Korea (42nd) and hosts Mexico (32nd). “It [world championship] has always been a challenge for Australia,” Lindsay said. “The tournament is always at the end of the AIHL season and after we’ve had a bit of a break, whereas other teams are at their peak.” Another challenge for players in the lead up to the championship is the distance. Players hail from six states, meaning each has to be responsible for maintaining their own training regimes. “The training comes down to a lot of self-discipline,” Lindsay said. “We record our workout regimes and the team trainer set programs, so there is a sense of accountability. “I’m training seven days a week – four days at the gym and three days of cardio and biometrics. “During the summer holidays I was doing Eliteprospects with NSA, which is an intensive program. Then there’s in-house league. I’m on the ice a lot still.” THE FULL TEAM:
