Malloy’s an All Star |

Bert Malloy said he is “excited” and looking forward to representing the Proski Newcastle Northstars at the 2017 AIHL All-Stars Weekend.
Malloy, captain of the Northstars, is the only Newcastle player that will take part in the third annual All-Stars event, which this year will be held at O'Brien Group Arena in Melbourne on June 3 and 4.
“It’s quite an honour,” Malloy said.
“This is my third All-Star game. Three for Three. It’s a lot of fun every year.”
Over two action packed days, AIHL players selected from all eight teams go head-to-head in a series of skills competitions, with each player vying to take home All Star honour and prizes, on the Saturday and a game on Sunday.
Each of the 34 All Stars will compete in at least two of the six skills contests: APA Group Breakaway Challenge, Air Canada Fastest Skater, Ryzer Elimination Shootout, Skaters Network Hardest Shot, Shooting Accuracy and the Rifle Media Stickhandling Competition.
On Sunday those skills are put to the test in a game. This year the teams will be captained by Jamie Bourke (Melbourne Mustangs) and Liam Webster (Melbourne Ice).
Malloy will play on Team Bourke.
Individual All Star players will compete for up to $20,000 in prizes during Saturday’s skills contest.
Teams will play for glory and the Mick McCormick Cup on Sunday.
The event is held during the June long weekend – the only free time for all teams during the AIHL season.
“I could take that weekend and put my legs up a bit but it’s a cool opportunity, and maybe I’ll make some money,” Malloy said.
Malloy will take part in the APA Group Breakaway Challenge and Ryzer Elimination Shootout skills contests on the Saturday.
“Wherever they put me I’m going to do my best but in the end it’s going to be a lot of giggles," he said.
“Playing on the national team and playing in this league for, I don’t know, for however many years, you get to know a lot of the guys.
“It’s really cool… you get to kick back and play with guys you go to battle with every week. It’s going to be fun. I’m looking forward to it.”
Single day tickets start at just $19.55. Weekend passes are available from $39.
