A dramatic third period turn around put the Newcastle Northstars back in the running to win their game against CBR Brave in Canberra on Sunday, and they did. Like the night before at home, against Melbourne Ice, the Northstars went into the third period trailing their opposition. A hot second period from CBR gave the home side a 4-1 lead. But a hat-trick from Northstars forward Zane Jones – his, and Newcastle’s, first of the season – and help from import Matt Marantz tied the game up 5-5 and took it to a shootout. Geordie Wudrick for the Brave was first the score in Sunday’s game. Marantz, however, was able to find his way through the Brave defence and past Aleksi Toivonen to equal the game 1-1 at the end of the first. The already physical game heated up in the second. As tempers flared, penalties were awarded and mistakes made. Defensive lapses led to a dismal second period for the Northstars, where goals from Casey Kubara, Stephen Blunden and Kai Miettinen gave CBR a comfortable 4-1 lead. The changing of the tide was swift in the third period. Jones, who had been in a number of physical battles throughout the game, struck just seconds into the period and scored. A second Jones goal came moments later to take the score to 4-3. The Brave cave, which had quietened significantly due to Jones’ two goals, found their voices once again as Blunden planted the puck behind Nick Mizen. Not to be deterred by the 5-3 score line, Jones struck again and earned himself a hat-trick. One more, from Marantz, capped off the game and took it to a shootout. After a long shootout, going to six players each team, it was the Northstars who prevailed, winning 6-5. It was only the Sunday before that CBR won in a shootout against the Northstars in Newcastle. As it tends to be when Newcastle and CBR meet, the game was tense, physical and penalty-filled. The Northstars will again travel to Canberra on Saturday to face the Brave before hitting the road to Macquarie to play Sydney Ice Dogs.
