The Newcastle Northstars were back on the ice on Saturday night for the first time since August 2020 in their return to top-tier ice hockey. The AIHL Northstars team went down 7-4 in a momentum-shifting game against 2019 AIHL Champions the Sydney Bears at Macquarie, in the first of a three exhibition games planned for this season between the two teams. Coach John Kennedy Jr joined the team on the ice, with Assistant Coach Amelia Matherson fulfilling bench duties during the game. "We kept with the Bears in the first period. We had a lapse of about 7 minutes in the second period, and all respect to the Bears - they capitalised" said Kennedy. The lapse cost the Northstars three goals and another, having the Northstars end the second period 5-1, four behind the Sydney Bears. In the third period, the Northstars fought back with three goals on the Bears to take the score to 5-4, but the Bears scored on breaks later in the period to take the win 7-4. Kennedy added, "I was really happy on how we fought back and got it back to within a goal. We learned some things and got to feature our young players - that's what you want from an exhibition game. "We've got a lot of young local guys in the team this year and they're coming together well." The Northstars have a final two weeks to prepare before beginning their 2021 season in earnest, this year competing in the AIHL-sponsored Mick McCormack Cup, with a full AIHL Goodall Cup season unable to proceed in 2021 due to restrictions and risks relating to Covid-19. The McCormack Cup will have the Northstars battle the Sydney Ice Dogs and CBR Brave, with two games at home in May - versus the Brave on Sunday the 9th (4pm start) and the Ice Dogs on Saturday the 29th (5pm start). The Sydney Bears were unable to commit to the McCormack Cup due to restricted ice time and limited players for 2021, but will face the Northstars three times in exhibition games, including last Saturday's game. The Northstars start their McCormack Cup season on May 9th at home versus the CBR Brave. Tickets are available for all home games now at https://northstars.thundertix.com/. |
