Northstars battle it out in double header loss

Northstars battle it out in double header loss

Courtney Kynaston

It was a tough weekend for the Newcastle Northstars and their fans with the team failing to secure a win, despite showing positive signs over the two games.
On Saturday night, the Northstars were defeated 6-7 while on the road in Canberra at the Phillip Swimming & Ice-Skating Centre. With a record crowd, it was a farewell for the Brave Cave as Canberra Brave moves to the AIS for the remainder of the season.

On Sunday night, the Northstars returned home but struggled to get a footing and were defeated 1-7 against the visiting Central Coast Rhinos.

“We played well in Canberra,” shared head coach Kevin Noble. “Individual play has to get better in some areas, but [Liam Ryan and Riley Klugerman] were an encouraging addition to the club, and they’re going to be good players for us.”

Captain Liam Manwarring shared: “It’s still early days, but that’s getting away from us, too. It simply comes down to hard work. I know there’s been some sickness going around and you can blame it on this and that, but it purely comes down to who wants to work the hardest.”

Saturday Night saw fan favourite Australian-Canadian Riley Klugerman return to the Northstars’ lineup. Straight into the mix, Klugerman secured a goal and an assist on his debut game for the 2025 season to start his season strong.

Fellow Australian-Canadian Liam Ryan joined the Northstars for his debut AIHL and Northstars game on Saturday. Again, Ryan showed promising signs of what is to come, scoring the opening goal of the game and his first career AIHL goal.

Saturday’s other goal scorers included Wehebe Darge, Shane Southwood, Francis Drolet and Ethan Hawes.

Northstars looked strong on Saturday night, with quick goals in response to the Brave and end-to-end opportunities. The scoreline bounced back and forth between the teams throughout the game. At the end of the second period, the game was tied up at four goals each. Unfortunately, the Canberra Brave edged ahead and, despite the Northstars scoring to come within one goal in the final minute of the game, the home team secured the win in regular time.

On Sunday, the Northstars returned home to a capacity crowd at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. It wound up a frustrating game for fans, with the Northstars attacking relentlessly, outshooting the Central Coast Rhinos with 48-22 shots-on-goal. In the end, though, the Rhinos and their rock-solid defence would prove too much as the Rhinos went on to win 1-7.

Ryan Annesley scored the sole goal for the Northstars in the final minutes of the second period. Despite 25 shots-on-goal in the final period, the Northstars just couldn’t find the goal again.

“We’re a really good hockey club. The first seven games are behind us, and what we can get better at is getting our full team together, and we haven’t had that yet,” shared Noble. “That doesn’t discredit the guys. There’s a huge collection of guys that are a huge part of our team. What we can do better, outside of the adjustments, coaching and playing. We’re going to have to manage better.”

Reflecting on the loss at home, Manwarring shared: “We let every single one of our fans down tonight. I think that was the worst outing we’ve had as a team and as a club in quite some years. This week’s going to be hard at practice, and so it should be. It’s early days, but we’re going to start put something together pretty quickly here now.””

The Northstars return to Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday, 18th May at 4.00 pm against Adelaide Adrenaline.
