Robert Malloy takes captaincy of North Stars
Sunday, April 24, 2016 - Submitted by Peter Lambert
Robert “Bert” Malloy becomes the North Stars’ fourth ever captain, taking the position following the announcement of Robert Starke’s retirement.
Malloy, a former AIHL team captain for the Sydney Ice Dogs, was selected from the North Stars ‘leadership group’ designated by coach Andrew Petrie.

Born and raised in the US state of Connecticut, Malloy is now an Australia citizen.
He recently returned from a gold medal win with the Australian Senior Men’s team in Mexico. Malloy acted as Assistant Captain on the Australian team.

As well as gold, the Australian team also won a promotion up from the IIHF’s Division IIB and into Division IIA.

Along with several other players from the NSW Central Coast, Bert takes the drive up the freeway to attend practices and games in his stride.

The gravity of being selected to lead a championship team on their title defence is not lost on Malloy.

“Obviously it’s an honour [to be selected]," he said.

“I have some big shoes to fill but I’m ready to get the season going.”

Besides Malloy and Starke, the only other two men to lead the North Stars into a season were Ray Sheffield (2003-2009, 2011-2014) and Bill Jones (2002).

Coach Andrew Petrie had a difficult decision to choose a leader amongst a team of leaders, but felt that Malloy stood out for a number of reasons.

"We were spoiled for choice as there are a number of natural leaders in the group. Leadership can't be faked; guys either have it or they don't and Bert definitely has it," he said.

"The NorthStars captaincy is an important and storied role and it's in safe and capable hands with Bert Malloy."
