Northstars secure 6 point weekend at home

Northstars secure 6 point weekend at home

Courtney Kynaston

Game two of the home double header saw the Northstars defeat Perth Thunder 6-5 with a nail-biting ending that had the crowd on their feet.

Perth lead in the first intermission break 1-2, and the Northstars came out hard in the second period equalising the game going into the second intermission tied at 3-3. It all came down to the last period and with the crowd on the edge of their seats the Northstars fought hard. Two early goals by the Northstars gave the home team the lead for the first time in the game at 5-3, and two quick goals from Perth had the game tied at 5-5.

With 48 seconds remaining, Daniel Berno came through for the team landing the game winning goal to secure the victory.  Berno shared, “I just went numb, the crowd were so loud, the boys were yelling, that always feels good. The crowd really bring us up when we need it and that feels so good.”

“It’s a pretty good hot streak here with some wins and we are finally stringing some strong stuff together, and we just found to win again,” stated Captain Liam Manwarring.

“A win is a win, and a six point weekend is huge, there’s no doubt about it. We played really well this weekend and deserved everything we got,” reflected Head Coach Kevin Noble.

“Credit to the guys for finding ways to win in these close games because that’s a hard thing to do. It’s a really good group we have, and they were excellent.”

“I thought we had our moments tonight where we were good, and there are some areas we can be better in. We had to overcome some of our own adversity but we are very happy to get the six points”

“Next weekend we have a tough set of games, so every week gets bigger and bigger. We have all the guys buy in and pull on the rope together which is huge right now. It’s a group full of character and every guy is buying into the role they’re playing and they’re doing a good job.”

“I think they believe in the final goal and we are doing so well as a result”

On the moment the game-winning goal was scored – “Obviously the guys are elated, they work so hard and finding ways to win those close games is tough. It’s hard to win, and its hard to win close hockey games. And they’ve been very successful in finding ways to win in third periods”

“There’s no doubt our crowd is the best in the league as far as I am concerned, and it gives us a huge bump. Other teams get energy from this atmosphere because they don’t get it everywhere else, so I am glad they are on our side.

Manwarring continued, “Good teams always find ways to win even if they’re down and you know, being down three and then scoring six unanswered goals that’s unheard of. It’s such a good feeling and credit to the boys. Everyone played really well.”

“We are really proud of this group and they’ve done a really good job this weekend to collect six points which was a goal, it is so much easier being with such a good group of guys.”

The Northstars have a double header road trip next weekend heading to Canberra to meet the CBR Brave at home at 5.15pm on the 17th June and down to Erina on Sunday 18th June at 3.30pm
